In the Make It Vegan series, we select the most inspiring fashion shows of the season, and this time it is Oscar de la Renta Autumn/Winter 2025. As always, we draw aesthetic inspiration to curate a selection of vegan items that fit the bill — both figuratively and literally.
Oscar de la Renta Fall-Winter 2025
Contemporary designers are clever at creating cool clothes. But when it comes to an old-time, yet seemingly never-out-of-fashion glamour, few can strike a perfect balance of powder and glitter. For Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, it is all about keeping the silhouettes as simple and classic as possible, while going all out with textures, prints and colours.
For the simple and classic part, there were 1960s dresses and jackets of mini length and boxy shape; 1990s strapless column gowns — the kind once worn by supermodels and celebrities across glossy pages, right before the decade got wasted; and 1980s voluminous coats with wide shoulders, far too cool to abandon in the cloakroom — heat be damned. Mid-calf corset dresses could just as easily serve as prom-fantasy pieces in any era.
For the drama, classic showstoppers delivered: peonies in every guise, from oversized prints to intricate appliqué, guipure, shimmering sequins in every shape, and, of course, feathers — silver and gold. If the Milky Way threw a party, these would surely be a yellow and a white supergiant competing to outshine one another, while the rest orbited uncertainly — or, better yet, stepped aside before they went full supernova.
Celestials aside, there was also a fair share of casual attire: relaxed tailoring, knit pullovers, denim and plaid for daytime meetings and work (after all, contemporary women have fought tooth and nail for the right to embrace both work and play with equal pride). And then there’s the cow print — but this one refuses to be confined to any category.
After all, the launch party for the new flagship at 686 Madison Avenue demanded a touch of excess. Chelsea Wang played live on a grand piano beneath the spiral staircase down which models descended, as if being presented for an old-timey debut.
While we wait for the day when all of these pieces are available in wool- and silk-free alternatives, we have curated a selection in a similar aesthetic from our trusted vegan fashion brands. You’re most welcome.
