Make It Vegan: All Shades of Blue

In the Make It Vegan series, we select the most inspiring fashion shows of the season—this time, it’s Diesel SS2025 from Milan Fashion Week—and take aesthetic inspiration to curate a selection of vegan items that fit the bill, both figuratively and literally.

Diesel Spring-Summer 2025

Glenn Martens had one task: to make Diesel cool again. And by cool, everyone means desirable and artful – something most brands aspire to, but few truly achieve. With denim, the task becomes doubly tricky. How do you reinvent such an omnipresent staple – which denim undeniably is – from such an overexposed brand – which, it must be said, Diesel once was?

It’s more than safe to say that Martens delivered with flying colours – pun intended, as the show was soaked in varying shades of blue. Around 80% of the collection is denim – washed, creased, and decadently distressed – and with each look, a new door opened onto what felt like endless possibilities. One couldn’t help but think, why didn’t I think of this earlier?, while mentally rifling through the denim in their own wardrobe, wondering whether the scissors are sharp enough.

Martens is as much a visionary as he is a champion of upcycling and circularity. During his five-year tenure at Diesel, the brand went from using barely 3% to over 50% regenerative, organic, or recycled cotton – a significant step in showing tangible commitment, with a touch of clairvoyance given the recent upheaval in the cotton supply chain. Now, freshly debuted at Maison Margiela, his couture collection – emphasis on couture – includes one-third upcycled materials. While Martens still uses wool and leather, his consistent embrace of upcycling makes him a champ – and keeps our hopes vivid that one day, even his most sublime pieces will be crafted from innovative vegan alternatives.
